Last Christmas, the circus owner, Jimmy Gates, decided to take some presents to a children's hospital. Dressed up as Father Christmas and accompanied by a‘guard of honour'of six pretty girls, he set off down the main street of the city riding a baby elephant called Jumbo. He should have known that the police would never allow this sort of thing. A policeman approached Jimmy and told him he ought to have gone along a side street as Jumbo was holding up the traffic. Though Jimmy agreed to go at once, Jumbo refused to move. Fifteen policemen had to push very hard to get him off the main street. The police had adifficult time, but they were most amused .‘Jumbo must weigh a few tons,'said a policemen afterwards, ‘soit was fortunate that we didn't have to carry him. Of course, we should arrest him, but as he has a good record, we shall let him off this time.'

dress up...:装扮成,有表示状态的含义;这里以过去分词短语充当整个句子状语
riding a baby elephant...:现在分词短语表伴随

set off:出发
2、He should have known that the police would never allow this sort of thing.
should+现在完成时:表示"本应该...,却没有做到..."
3、 ought to have gone along a side street as Jumbo was holding up the traffic.
hold up:阻碍
4、Jumbo must weigh a few tons.
weigh: v.重达(ht)
5、as he has a good record, we shall let him off this time
let sb. off:从轻发落;免去某人的...
注意句中非谓语动词connecting是ing形式
① 表示其与主语是主动的关系
② 表示动作正在发生
如果非谓语动词中的ed形式表示其与主语是被动的关系

容易混淆的情态动词
Should
1)表示比较肯定的猜测
=>It should be the postman at the door.
=>Jane should be in New York by now.
2)最好/应该...做
=>You should listen to your parents.
=>We shouldn't ill-treat animals.
3)should+现在完成时:表示"本应该...,却没有做..."
=>He should have known that the police would never allow this sort of thing.
=>Look at the trouble you get yourself in should have listened to me.
Ought to
1)表示比较肯定的猜测,或加现在完成时:表示"本应该...,却没有做...",可与should替换
=>It ought to be the postman at the door.
=>You ought to listen to your parents.
=>He ought to have known that the police would never allow this sort of thing.
2)Ought to 不会出现在否定句或疑问句中,例如下面几句中的should不能用ought to替换
=>Should I give him a call when I hear the news?
=>You should't be so impatient with the child.
Must
1)表示非常肯定的猜测
=>She must eat too much, or she wouldn't be so fat.
=>Our guest must have arrived by now.
2)必须做...
=>You must turn in your papers before Friday.
=>You must keep quiet, or he will lose his temper.
Have to
表示迫于某种外界因素而不得不做某事
=>I'm sorry I can't come to the party because I have to attend a meeting.
=>Fifteen policemen had to push very hard to get him off the main street.
